April Wrap Up | 2021

Hello book friends!! How the heck are you ? I hope April treated you well. April was a rough month for me, I had some mental health setbacks as well as a reading slump. I still was able to finish 6 books which I take as a win. During my slump I fell in love with cozy gaming 🧡 So this is coming at y’a a little late, I hope you enjoy!

The Southern Book Club Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix ★★★★

CW: child abuse, child self-harm, sexual assault, domestic violence, emotional abuse, dead bodies, murder, suicide attempt.

This book was fantastic, unlike anything I have read in a while!!!! I grew up loving horror and I haven’t read much of this genre is awhile.Picture a group of housewives in the early 90s who are united by books. They go about the mundane tasks of raising there kids and housework, when our main character Patricia wishes for something exciting to happen. She’s about to get her wish! I devoured this book! The tension and atmosphere was spot with with the dark 90s vibes.The vampire in this book is one of those charming monsters that pulls everyone under his spell.This book was highly entertaining, although there are some graphic scenes and I will never go near a rat for the rest of my life.

You Love Me by Caroline Kepnes ★★★

It hurts me that I didn’t love this, because I truly do love Joe as a character but the plot really wasn’t doing it for me. I loved the first book and I thought the second book was okay, I didn’t have high expectations for this one. Although I still feel let down by some of the events that went down. For me nothing will live up to the first book.

Addicted To You by Krista Ritchie and Becca Ritchie ★★★★

This book was a re- read, I first read it in 2015. I was craving something fast paced and that I knew I’d enjoy. I have read the first three books in this series but then stopped. Lily is a sex addict, Lo is an alcoholic, together they have an agreement to fake date to keep there true lives a secret. There is so much drama in this book,. Of course there are some faults , mainly that the at enable each other’s addictions .When they make some new friends it becomes harder to keep there secrets.

How We Fall Apart by Katie Zhao ★★★★

Dark academia murder mystery with an Asian American cast! Ten pages in and I was hooked. This book was so good, I absolutely loved it.This really felt like Pretty Little Liars but in a very prestigious school. I really like the setting, and how it showed the real struggles of how competitive academics can be. The pressure these students feel to be perfect, seems impossible to achieve.I cannot wait for more books from Katie Zhao. I highly recommend.

A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Claire ★★★★

I have seen this book around forme a few years, but lately it has been everywhere. I am so happy I picked this up, it’s a Hades and Persephone retelling. I was glued to the page, oh god this was so good! I loved Persephone right away, she is kind, compassionate and a complete badass. Hades as a character was so well done. He is my forever favourite villain. I also really liked seeing glimpses of the other gods and goddesses. I’m intrigued by the ending and will be pu king up book 2 soon.

If I had Your Face by Frances Cha ★★★

Set in modern day Seoul, we follow the lives of four young women. This didn’t read like a novel more like we got glimpses into these women’s lives. If I Had Your Face was a compelling read, exploring modern Korean womanhood, sexism, gender roles and the beauty industry. This book is very character driven, and has almost no plot. This was an interesting story and I definitely would read this author in the future.
