As a fan of Stephanie Perkins contemporary book’s I was excited to see how she would do with a completely different genre such as horror. I have to say, I enjoyed this book, I wasn’t blown away by it but I really liked it. As a huge horror fan I loved that there was blood and gore with a high body count. There was just something missing for me. I felt like the mystery of the killers identity shouldn’t have been reveled so early in the story. It would have been better to find out at the final scene who it was. Also the motive for the kills was really underwhelming.

Makani, our main character, was an African American native Hawaiian, was the new girl in a small town, sent to live with her grandmother by her divorcing parents. Makani is an interesting character and had a lot of depth, especially when we learn about her back story.

Perkins writing like her other books, has an easy flow and pulls you into the story. The romance is heavily rooted into the story. It is a fast read I finished it in two sittings, could have finished it in one but I had to work. I liked Makani and Ollie’s relationship, however this was supposed to be a horror novel and some of the romance I could have done without.Call me morbid but my favorite parts of the story was the death scenes. They were gruesome and well thought out, no two deaths were written the same.

It was an entertaining, creepy read and very different from Stephanie Perkins other books. I would recommend reading if your looking for a fast fun spooky read.

  1. I’ve read two of Perkins romance books, which while not amazing, were still good. Seeing that she’s moved onto a genre vastly different than what she’s written is interesting but makes me cautious – though I’m still tempted to try it out anyway!
