The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

ARC provided by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

I haven’t read to many Christina Lauren books, but these ladies sure can write a good romance. This was such a cute Rom-Com, it will make the perfect summer read. I finished it in two sitting, the pages just flew by.  This book was such a fun ride and has me aching to pick up more books from Christina Lauren.

That’s the point of luck; it happens when and where it happens.

The Unhoneymooners follows Olive Torres as she goes on her twin sister Ami’s honeymoon. During the wedding reception everyone comes down with a bad case of food poisoning, except for Olive and Ethan, Ami’s new husbands brother.Olive and Ethan have hated each other from the moment they met three years ago, now on there siblings honeymoon in Maui they must pretend to be newlyweds. They get into some pretty sticky situations, and soon the fake marriage alerts them to the fake that they have a lot of chemistry. That they may have been wrong in hating each other.

“When I signed up for this honeymoon, I had no idea it would involve so much nudity.”

This book has one a my favorite tropes , Hate to Love  and this book fueled my love for that trope.  Also includes fake dating/fake marriage and a slow burn romance .I was laughing out loud and swooning over Ethan. I was obsessed with there banter, Olive is so sassy and Ethan’s attitude was just to much, I loved them. I really love that Olive is a strong curvy woman who stands up for herself and takes no shit from Ethan. Throughout the story she starts to discover who she really is, and what is important to her. Ethan comes across as a huge jerk at first but honestly that’s what made me love him. As the book progresses we find he is actually really sweet and hilarious.

I had a few issues with the story but those are more personal opinions than the book being bad. I really didn’t like Dane, Olive’s sisters husband, he was honestly the worst! Ethan coming to his defense, I understand where he was coming from but it infuriated me that he was standing up for such a shitty person.

If you’re a fan of rom-coms, and want a funny, cute book, I highly recommend picking this one up. I just loved this so so so so much! Christina Lauren is one  quickly becoming of my favorite authors.

A Girl Like Her by Tailia Hibbert

A Girl Like Her is the first book in the Ravenswood series, and the February pick for the Dragons and Tea Book Club. I’ve read one other book by Tailia Hibbert and halfway through this one I added almost all of her other books to my TBR. I love her writing and her characters; this book was everything! I loved it so much, Tailia is a gem and everyone should be reading her books. This book was absolute perfection!

This book starts out with Evan, finishing off the day at his new job, the son of his boss whom he doesn’t like to much offers to drive him home. After trying to rebuff his offer he accepts the drive, while walking to the car a young woman runs straight into him, and from that moment he is intrigued by her. He soon discovers that she is his neighbor.

→ Ruth Kabbah: I loved that Ruth has autism and that this is #ownvoices. She is a web comic artist, which warms my nerdy little heart. She loves to wear pajamas with marvel heroes all over them and I was totally here for it. She is also fierce and 100% genuine. Ruth is also a curvy woman of color and has autism, but these traits do not define her, they are just a piece of who she is.

→ Evan Miller: He is an ex-soldier, who has just moved to Ravenswood, he is also Ruth’s new neighbor. He is a tall, muscled blacksmith with a heart of gold. He is a good cook, he prepares meals for his friend at work, he was raised to bring your neighbors a gift upon meeting them so he prepares a meal in anticipation of meeting his new neighbor. After realizing Ruth lives next door and cannot cook, he inserts himself into her life, preparing meals for her nightly.

This is a slow-burn romance, I absolutely loved their relationship. They’re so adorable. I loved that Evan was completely accepting of Ruth, right after meeting her. I simply adored “A Girl Like Her”, it was such a unique and fun story.

99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne

ARC provided by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne was one of my favorite reads last year. So, I was over the moon when I was approved to read 99 Percent Mine. This book is nothing like The Hating Game. I went in thinking that 99 Percent Mine would be one of my favorite romances of the year, but I was disappointed.

The story follows Darcy, she is a wedding photographer, working at a shady bar. Her life is a mess. She’s got a lot of insecurities with a sort fuse for a temper, which gets her into trouble.

Upon leaving the bar one night after a nasty incident with a co worker, she finds her childhood friend Tom waiting for her. Darcy and her brother Jamie have recently lost there grandmother, Tom has started his own construction business and will be renovating on the house getting it ready to sell.

“Maybe he’s 1 percent mine. That has to be enough.”

>>Darcy– She is sarcastic to the point of being slightly annoying. She is very irresponsible, having a heart condition and ignoring your health doesn’t make you cool. She hasn’t refilled her medication in months and she drinks often. She really rubbed me the wrong way. Her edgy fashion was also mentioned way to often.

>> Tom- Is a hardworking sweetheart, who puts way to much pressure on himself to be perfect. He is torn between the twins, his loyalty to Jamie as his best friend and his long time feelings for Darcy. He has always acted as a buffer between them and his own feelings seem to get pushed aside.

I really love the friends to lovers/ brothers best friend trope, and there was a few really heartwarming moments but in the end the romance kinda fell flat for me.

I felt like the relationship between Darcy and her twin brother Jamie, could have been so cute. But I felt like they did everything wrong, always competing with each other for Tom’s attention and bickering like children.

Fight or Flight by Samantha Young

TW: Physical abuse

This was my first Samantha Young book, so I wasn’t sure what I was expecting going into it. I know her previous books are pretty popular. I didn’t love this book I found it good but not great. I really didn’t like the love interest, he eventually grew on me as the book progressed but I still disliked his personality.

This story follows Ava Breevort who is flying back to Boston after attending the funeral of her childhood friend, Gem. She has a unpleasant encounter at the airport with another traveler Caleb Scott, a rude Scot who steals her spot in line and grabs the last first class seat on the plane. They end up sitting next to each another and spend most of their flight bickering .After all there unpleasant exchanges it somehow leads to these two spending the night together while on a layover.Once back in Boston fate throws them together again, where they decide to carry on with a no-strings-attached relationship. Ava and Caleb might hate each other, but the tension and there attraction towards each other made there encounters very passionate.

Ava Breevort: I loved Ava! She is a beautiful interior designer at a small company. She is feisty, confident but had some self esteem issues, people have been telling her entire life how beautiful she is, making her feel like that’s all she is. I love how she kept putting Caleb in his place and didn’t put up with all his crap! She is a loyal and trusting friend. Her friendship with Harper was one of my favorite parts of the book. Even though Harper goes through something traumatic later in story, Ava is right there supporting her friend.

Caleb Scott: This guy was definitely an alpha-male, tall, scruffy and tattooed. He is rude and some of the things he says were just really mean. As the story progressed we do understand what has lead him to be this way, but just because you were hurt in the past doesn’t mean you now get to be an awful human being. He is sweet at times and he does care about Ava, but he is scared of getting to close to he is mean to guard his own heart.

Fight or Flight is a hate-to-love romance, which is many favorite trope, I just wasn’t feeling it for these two. I did enjoy the writing and the character development, and I will probably read another book by this author in the future. It was a pretty fast read and it was enjoyable. There were some really good writing in there, and some very well built tension and characters. But I didn’t love it.

I gave this a 3.5 stars. This book is set to release on October 16 2018.

Pennies by Pepper Winters Blog Tour

Pennies
Pepper Winters
(Dollar #1)
Publication date: July 20th 2016
Genres: New Adult, Romance

“At 18 I had pennies, but money didn’t make me bold. At 19 I had dollars, but it didn’t dull the pain of being sold. At 20 I had hundreds, but then I met him and was found. At 21 I had thousands, but all I wanted was to be bound.”

“At 23 I had dollars, but life changed and made me rich. At 25 I had hundreds, but it wasn’t enough to stop my killing itch. At 27 I had thousands, but my reputation didn’t set me free. At 29 I had millions, but I met her and could finally see.”

Tasmin was killed on her 18th birthday. She had everything planned out. A psychology degree, a mother who pushed her to greatness, and a future anyone would die for. But then her murderer saved her life, only to sell her into a totally different existence.

Elder went from penniless to stinking rich with one twist of fate. His lifetime of crime and shadows of thievery are behind him but no matter the power he now wields, it’s not enough. He has an agenda to fulfil and he won’t stop until it’s complete.

But then they meet.

A beaten slave and a richly dressed thief. Money is what guided their separate fates. Money is what brought them together. And money is ultimately what destroys them.

She was poor.

He was rich.

Together…they were bankrupt.

WORD OF WARNING

Pennies (Dollars #1) is a DARK ROMANCE. This means there will be hard to read scenes, graphic language, and sexual content (both implied and explicitly written). Please do not read if falling in love with a man who dresses in monster robes rather than knightly armour offends you. This is not a fairy-tale. This is a black abyss that must be climbed blind before deserving the light. Along with literary darkness, this is book one of a five book series. Each subsequent novel will be released every few months (so your fingernails don’t tire holding onto the cliff-hanger), and each is full-length. Please also remember not all answers are given and not every character is as they seem. There are beasts adorned in angel clothing and angels hiding in beast’s fur.

Remember that.

You have been warned.

Don’t say you weren’t told.

Read at your own peril.

Fall in love with Elder Prest at your own risk.

Are you ready?

You sure?

You really, really sure?

Okay then…enter the world of pennies and dollars.

EXCERPT:

FREEDOM.

Such a modest word.

It carried very little importance for those who had it. But for those who didn’t, it was the most precious, prized, and promised hope of all.

I supposed I was lucky to know what freedom felt like.

For eighteen years, I’d been free. Free to learn what I wanted, befriend who I liked, and flirt with boys who passed my rigorous criteria.

I was a simple girl with ideals and dreams, encouraged by society to believe nothing could hurt me, that I should strive for an excellent career, and no one could stop me. Rules would keep me safe, police would keep the monsters away, and I could remain innocent and naïve to the darkness of the world.

Freedom.

I had it.

But then, I lost it.

Murdered, resuscitated, and sold.

I lost my freedom for so many years.

Until the day he entered my cage.

Him, with the black eyes and blacker soul.

The man who challenged my owner.

And set my imprisonment on an entirely different path.
