Spoiler Free Review | From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout | 2020

I LOVED this book so much! From Blood and Ash is absolutely unlike any other JLA book I’ve ever read! This is her first high fantasy book but holds the same addictive writing we crave from her.

❝You’re an absolutely stunning, murderous little creature.❞

Poppy’s life has never been her own. She was chosen by gods from her birth to be a Maiden. A beacon of hope for her kingdom, she is set to ascend on her nineteenth birthday. Her entire life she has been sheltered and hidden away from the world, when she does leave her room she is shielded by a veil over her face. She must be protected from touch and pleasure as she needs to remain pure.

She does not believe this should be her life, But the choice is not hers to make, so she rebels. One night Poppy sneaks out of her room and goes to a seedy gambling den where a lot more then that goes on if you get my drift. Where she has an encounter with a very attractive guard named Hawke. Soon after Poppy begins to question everything, I clueing her role and if this is really how she wants to live her life.

“You deserve so much more than what awaits you.”

I honestly cannot give this book enough praise! It took the book world by storm and I am so happy to be caught up in it. This book has everything, forbidden romance, adventure, murder, secrets, ancient creatures! I really don’t want to say much more than this because this is a story you will want to discover for yourself.

Poppy is probably my new favourite heroine she was fierce, witty, brave and vulnerable. I really loved that she is portrayed as innocent and docile but she has secretly been trained in combat! Her romance with Hawke challenges her in ways she never expected. Opening her eyes to everything going on around her.

Hawke is a guard in the royal army that is assigned to keep Poppy safe. He quickly moves up the ranks and soon he is transferred to be her personal guard. I can say this without a doubt that he is the perfect addition to your book boyfriend list! He’s the perfect mix of charming, cocky, and he has that perfect amount of mystery that makes your heart pound.

I’ll say it again. I don’t care what you are. I care about who you are.

The romance in this book is so full of chemistry and it’s fun, there banter will have you literally laughing out loud. There is some steamy scenes, this is a new adult book so the sexual descriptions do get pretty detailed. But there is also so many sweet and heart wrenching g moments as well. This book is just everything and definitely in my top 5 of the year.

Overall, From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout was an amazing romance and I immediately picked up the sequel because that cliffhanger was huge !!! This book is over 500 pages, but it reads so quickly. I couldn’t believe how fast I read this, and it left me swooning and wanting more. I highly recommend this book!

  1. Great review! I enjoyed this book, a lot more than I thought I would. I really enjoyed the whole ‘ascension’ aspect as something new and different and was a bit annoyed when the plot twist revealed that… well I don’t want to add spoilers but it was pretty generic! I really enjoyed Poppy’s character though, she was surprisingly feminist which I have to admit I wasn’t expecting from this sort of romance book haha. Here’s my review of from blood and ash 🙂 https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2021/02/05/from-blood-and-ash-book-review/
