Contemporary Recommendations

Hello ! I though since contempararyathon is next week I would share some of my favorite contemporaries. I will have a second post going up about my favorite romantic contemporaries.

Sadie – Courtney Summers

I wasn’t to sure what I was getting into when I started this book. All I knew was that the novel was half told in the format of a podcast, of a girl searching for her sister murderer. This is an extremely dark story. The narrative was so well done, split between two different timelines. This book is very triggering as I’ve mentioned, but this is a story that will stay with me.

A Very Large Expanse of Sea – Tahareh Mafi

This story takes place in 2002, a year after the horrors of 9/11. This story follows Shirin, a sixteen year old, Muslim girl born in America who has always wears her hijab.She is in her sixth high school, because her family moves around a lot. She is faced with a lot of racism,including actual assaults against her. She has had enough with the world and tries to blend into the background.This book made me feel a vast of many different emotions.I really loved this book!

What If It’s Us – Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera

I loved this book so much.This story is adorable, and it’s so sweet.The character’s were realistic and refreshing,even the side character’s were really well developed. This book is about two boys, Arthur is from Georgia and is spending his summer in NYC and Ben is a light skinned Puerto Rican stuck in summer school with his ex-boyfriend. They end up meeting at a post office and the story starts from there.This book was everything and I can’t recommend it enough.

Radio Silence – Alice Oseman

Radio Silence is one of the best contemporary book I’ve ever read! This book follows Frances Janvier in her final year of school before going off to University. Frances is also mixed raced and Bisexual. She befriends a boy, Aled, he is demisexual. This book is just fantastic, it has platonic friendships, diversity and there are some dark things that happen.  It touches on subjects of abuse and how it effects the person into thinking they have to be perfect, which leads to depression and implied suicidal thinking.

The Hate U Give – Angie Thomas

This book deserves all the hype and if you haven’t read it yet I highly suggest you pick it up. From the first page I was hooked. The main character, a sixteen-year-old girl named Starr, is so lovable and her family dynamics are heartwarming. Starr’s voice is so powerful. This is a very important book that is very relevant to what is happening in the world today.
