The Wicked King by Holly Black

#1 The Cruel Prince ★★★★★
#2 The Lost Sisters ★★★★
#3 The Wicked King ★★★★★

“His mouth curls into a smile. His eyes shine with wicked intent. “Look at them all, your subjects. A shame not a one knows who their true ruler is.”

First off this was an OUTSTANDING READ, and I loved every second of it! Holly Black has done it again. She is a literary genius, I have loved every book I’ve ever read by her. This book was perfect. I don’t think there’s any combination of words that could accurately convey just how good this book is.

The Wicked King picks up 5 months after the cliffhanger in The Cruel Prince. We immediately get into the narrative, we get tidbits of information on what happened in the past five months. This review will be spoiler free but may mention some events that happened in The Cruel Prince.

“If you’re the sickness, I suppose you can’t also be the cure.”

Jude is with the high king of Faerie, at the end of the first book she parted in bad terms with Madoc and Taryn. Oak is in the mortal world with Vivi. Taryn is still set to marry Locke, she hasn’t spoken to Jude in five months. Finally, Cardan is the new King, but he must obey everything Jude commands for a Year sand a day.

The political intrigue in this book, is so strong! There are so many twists and turns you won’t know what to believe. This book is 90% court intrigue, scheming, and angst, which is the recipe for an amazing story.

Both Jude and Cardan were so very well written in this book. ALL OF THE SEXUAL TENSION! I live for Jude and Cardan’s relationship, enemies to lover is my absolute favorite trope. All of the kisses and touches! This is the greatest enemies to lovers story ever! Holly Black created one of the most complicated yet tender relationship in YA Fantasy. The dynamic between Jude and Cardan is just crazy, I will forever go down with this ship.

“Power is much easier to acquire than it is to hold on to.”

Jude – I love her so much and my love for her only grows stronger. She is one of my favorite female characters ever! She’s clever and ambitious and sometimes even cruel, but we also get to see her vulnerable and soft. She definitely takes a lot more risks in this book.

Cardan- He has to be one of my favorite characters ever.I have a huge weakness for morally questionable characters, who do not often show there vulnerability but when they do your heart breaks for them. I loved how we get to know Cardan a little bit more in this book, he had a lot more page time. He has so much character development and I am here for it! He continued to surprise me,you never quite know what he has up his sleeve or his true intentions. I cannot wait to see what happens in The Queen of Nothing.

Locke – He is the worst! But we can all agree he is a great antagonist. He is clever and scheming. In the end we never know what he’s up to or what his end goal is. I just really need Jude to punch him in the face. Thank you, next!

Taryn –I just…..I don’t know what to say about this girl. We got to see a little of her intentions in the novella The Lost Sister but after everything that happened in The Wicked King I need more of her. Taryn is intriguing, but she has betrayed Jude over and over. Jude loves her so much its heartbreaking to see how Taryn treats her.

“Angry was better than being scared. Better than remembering she was a mortal among monsters.”

The last 100 pages–shit, the last 10 pages had so much action and the dialogue was superb. The Wicked King ends with a cliffhanger that already has me dying to get my hands on the next installment in the series. I cannot wait a whole year for the third book. THIS BOOK WAS INSANE. I loved it SO much! This book was such a wild ride from start to finish. I honestly already want to re read it, I cant stop thinking about it!
