Synopsis

Paul Strom has the perfect life: a glittering career as an advertising executive, a beautiful wife, two healthy boys and a big house in a wealthy suburb. And he’s the perfect husband: breadwinner, protector, provider. That’s why he’s planned a romantic weekend for his wife, Mia, at their lake house, just the two of them. And he’s promised today will be the best day ever.

But as Paul and Mia drive out of the city and toward the countryside, a spike of tension begins to wedge itself between them and doubts start to arise. How much do they trust each other? And how perfect is their marriage, or any marriage, really?

Forcing us to ask ourselves just how well we know those who are closest to us, Best Day Ever crackles with dark energy, spinning ever tighter toward its shocking conclusion. In the bestselling, page-turning vein of The Couple Next Door and The Dinner, Kaira Rouda weaves a gripping, tautly suspenseful tale of deception and betrayal dark enough to destroy a marriage…or a life.

I actually really enjoyed this book. I read it in just a few hours, not wanting to stop once I started. I knew nothing about this book going into it. I picked it up at Chapters because it was a new thriller and it was on the recommended shelf, which is always cheaper.

I found it to be a fast paced novel. Starting in the morning Paul and Mia get ready for a road trip to there lake house for the first time since the previous Autumn. This story takes place during a 24 hour hour time line. Told in first person narration strictly from Paul’s point of view, we get to see his mindset. He is an unreliable narrator because he believe himself to be above everyone around him including his wife.

The author does a great job at building tension between Paul and Mia. As the reader you get to see inside Paul’s mind but see Mia reaction to what he is saying. He is a man with many secrets that Mia does not know about. Quickly we see that paul is not all that he wants us to see. There is something sinister about him. I didn’t like him right away, but then again were not really supposed to.

The ending ties up the story nicely, leaving no loose ends. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick paced domestic thriller.
