My Review

I loved The Hate U Give!! I gave it 5 stars. I have a good feeling it’ll end up on my end-of-year list.Very powerful read!  Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement,it doesn’t shy away from the hard topics. This is exactly the book I needed. From the first page I was hooked.I read almost the whole book in one sitting today and I’m not sure if I can express my thoughts properly.

I have to admit I teared up multiple times but also this book had me smiling and laughing the next moment.The incident happens early on in the book, which I believe was a good call because we learn about Khalil as the story progresses. I loved all the characters and they were all essential to the story arc.

The main character, a sixteen-year-old girl named Starr, is so loveable and her family dynamics are heartwarming. Starr’s voice is so powerful. Everything she went through, I felt it al with her.The decisions she had to make were not easy ones to make. Her emotions were so raw, I just wanted to reach in and give her a hug.

Her father Maverick is my favorite, he breaks so many stereotypes, he cries at his son’s graduation showing that even tough men cry. He also reenforces some stereotypes too. Real people are complex and have conflicting feelings.

The relationship with her family is beautiful and touching. Both of Staar’s parents are supportive of her which is refreshing in a YA novel. The siblings were realistic they teased each other but they also stood up for each other throughout the book.

It also showed the emotions of the people who do not understand the situation. I could go on and on and on so I’ll just say I highly recommended! It’s an important book.
